Tuckpointing
& Rebuilding
Tuckpointing
refers to the repair of the mortar joints between bricks.
Over time, as bricks and mortar are exposed
to the elements, they will show wear and tear. When the mortar begins
to weaken and starts to fall out, the bricks may become loose. When
this occurs, some form of repair is required to ensure not only safety,
but also for continued enjoyment.
Flaking
Bricks
As the face of bricks deteriorate or
fall off, it may cause the entire brick to fall out of the chimney.
Crown
Repairs
The cement slab at the top of the chimney
is the crown. It is a sloped bed of mortar that helps shed rain water.
If left unattended at signs of deterioration, damage may occur from
minor crown seals to a complete crown rebuilding.
Flashing
Repairs
The strip of metal that joins the chimney
base to the roofline is called the flashing. This flashing prevents
the elements from penetrating this joint and entering your home.
Water
Repellent
This is used on the exterior chimney
structure as a protective layer against the damaging effects of the
elements. This, however, is not a substitute for masonry repairs.
Firebox
Repairs
The firebox holds the wood where you
start a fire. If the firebox is damaged, such as having cracked bricks,
repair is needed to restore the structural integrity of the fireplace.
